Which home projects need a porta potty, and for how long?
Most home porta potty rentals in Chattanooga fall into 7 situations, from a bathroom remodel to a backyard party. A remodel of the only bathroom usually runs 3 to 6 weeks. A septic backup may need just a few days. The table shows the unit and service each one needs.
| Home situation | Unit that fits | How long people usually keep it | Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bathroom remodel (only bathroom) | Standard | 3 to 6 weeks | Weekly, included |
| Whole-house remodel or addition | Standard, plus a hand wash station | 2 to 6 months | Weekly, included |
| Septic or sewer backup | Standard | A few days to 2 weeks | Usually none for short stays |
| Water shutoff for repairs | Standard or deluxe with a sink | 1 to 5 days | Usually none |
| Owner-builder new house | Standard | 6 to 12 months | Weekly, included |
| Land with no bathroom | Standard or towable | Months, or season to season | Weekly, included |
| Backyard party | Standard or deluxe | Friday to Monday | Arrives clean, no visit needed |
Where can a porta potty go at a house?
A porta potty at a house usually goes at the side or end of the driveway, on level, firm ground. The driver can roll a standard unit about 50 feet from the truck, and a backyard gate must be at least 48 inches wide. The truck needs a path 10 feet wide with no low wires.
- Driveway: the easiest spot for delivery and weekly service.
- Side yard: good for privacy if the ground is firm and the gate is 48 inches or wider.
- Backyard: fine for parties. Skip it if the path has steps or a steep slope.
- Near the back door: handy during a remodel or a septic repair.

Does my HOA allow a porta potty during a remodel?
Many Chattanooga-area HOAs have rules about temporary structures, so read your covenants before delivery. Setting the unit beside the garage, facing the door away from the street, and sharing a pickup date with the board solves most concerns. A remodel unit usually stays 3 weeks to 6 months.
Tell your next-door neighbors too. A short heads-up about the delivery day and the planned end date goes a long way.

Does a home porta potty need weekly service?
A home porta potty kept longer than a week gets weekly service at no extra charge. A standard unit holds about 200 uses between visits. A family of 4 using it 5 times a day each fills it in about 10 days, so weekly service keeps it fresh. Short rentals of a few days usually need none.
Each visit includes a pump-out, a scrub of the seat, walls and floor, fresh deodorizer, and new paper and sanitizer.
What should you do when a septic or sewer line backs up?
When a septic tank or sewer line backs up, stop using indoor toilets and call by 12 PM on a weekday for same-day delivery. We set the unit near the back door or driveway. Most families keep it a few days to 2 weeks, until the plumber signs off.
Our septic backup guide explains what to do while you wait for repairs. Need the unit right now? See same-day porta potty rental.
Can you put a porta potty on land with no bathroom?
Land with no bathroom, such as a building lot, hunting land or a small farm, is a good fit for a standard unit with weekly service. The truck needs firm ground and a path about 10 feet wide. Towable units on a trailer work well when the spot changes often.
Steep lots need a quick check first. On Signal Mountain, Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge, we may set the unit at the top or the bottom of the drive. Read our tips for hillside lots or the Signal Mountain rental page.

Home rental questions
How much does it cost to rent a porta potty for my house?
A standard unit for a home remodel runs $145 to $195 per 28-day cycle, with weekly service included. A standard unit for a weekend backyard party runs $165 to $225. Delivery and pickup are included in our core area. See the porta potty cost guide for the rest.
If I keep it longer than planned, does the price change?
The rental rolls into a new 28-day cycle on its own, so there is nothing to call about when the job runs long. Weekly service keeps going. Billing stops on the day you call for pickup.
Can the driver drop the unit while I'm at work?
The driver does not need you there. Mark the spot with a cone or a ribbon, text any gate code, and tell us which way the door should face. The driver calls about 30 minutes before arriving.
Our water is shut off for repairs. Can we rent one for just a few days?
Short rentals of a few days are common during water line and plumbing repairs. A unit holds about 200 uses, so a family usually needs no service visit. Order by 12 PM on a weekday, and we can deliver the same day.
Can the unit go in my backyard instead of the driveway?
A backyard spot works when the gate is at least 48 inches wide and the path is firm and fairly level. The driver can roll a standard unit about 50 feet from the truck. Steps, steep slopes and soft lawns mean a driveway spot is the safer choice.
Will the unit damage my driveway or lawn?
A standard unit weighs about 160 pounds empty and sits on a flat base, so it rarely marks pavement. On grass, it can leave a pale square after a few weeks. On soft red clay, we set it on plywood or gravel to keep it level.
