How to Place a Porta Potty on a Steep or Hillside Lot

Chattanooga is a city of ridges. On a steep lot, the hard part of a porta potty rental is not the unit. It is finding a flat spot the truck can reach, today and on every service visit after.

Where should a porta potty go on a sloped lot?

A porta potty on a sloped lot should sit on the most level, firm spot within about 50 feet of where our truck can park. A standard unit needs roughly 4 by 4 feet. A slope you can feel under your feet is too steep, because the door may swing and the unit may lean.

Good spots on hillside lots are usually the driveway apron, a parking pad, a flat patch beside the garage, or a graded area at the street. Avoid the downhill edge of a cut, fresh fill dirt and anywhere water runs during a storm.

A standard porta potty is about 44 inches wide, 47 inches deep and 90 inches tall. It weighs about 160 pounds empty.

How far can the driver roll a unit from the truck?

Our driver can roll a standard unit about 50 feet from the truck over firm, fairly level ground. Gates must be at least 48 inches wide. The truck itself needs a path about 10 feet wide with 12 feet of overhead clearance and no low wires or branches in the way.

Placement checklist for steep or tight sites
Check thisWhat we need
Roll distanceAbout 50 ft from the truck, firm and fairly level
Gate width48 in. or wider for a standard unit
Truck path widthAbout 10 ft
Overhead clearance12 ft, no low wires or limbs
Pad for a wheelchair-accessible unitFlat, firm area about 7.5 x 7.5 ft

A tape measure on the gate saves a second trip. If you need a wheelchair-accessible unit, plan for its larger, flat pad first.

What happens with steep driveways on Signal Mountain or Lookout Mountain?

Steep driveways on Signal Mountain, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge and Walden sometimes mean we set the unit at the top or bottom of the drive instead of halfway up. Tell us the grade when you book. A photo of the driveway from the street helps us plan the right spot in 1 call.

Many ridge homes have a flat parking pad at the top of the drive. That is often the best spot. Read our notes for porta potty rental on Signal Mountain and porta potty rental on Lookout Mountain for local details.

Switchback drives and tight turns matter too. Tell us if a delivery truck has trouble with your drive, or if neighbors share it.

How do you keep a porta potty from tipping on a windy ridge?

A porta potty on a windy ridge stays upright best when it sits fully level, out of the open crest, and close to a wall, fence or building that blocks the wind. Turn the door away from the usual wind direction. If a unit does tip, call us and we usually replace it the same day.

Strapping a unit to a fixed post is a common fix on exposed sites. Ask us before you add your own straps or stakes, so nothing blocks the door or the service hatch.

Storm season brings strong gusts along the ridges. A level, sheltered spot is the single best defense.

Why does the service path matter after delivery?

The service path matters because long-term units get a pump-out and cleaning every week, and the truck must reach the unit each time. A path that was open on delivery day can close up 1 week later. Lumber piles, parked cars, dumpsters and new fences are the usual blockers on building sites.

Keep the same 10-foot-wide lane open for the whole rental. If the unit has to move, call us and we will move it on the next visit.

More questions on this topic

Can a porta potty sit on a sloped driveway if I put boards under it?

Shims and boards can shift once people step in and out. A level spot is safer. If no flat spot exists, call us and we will plan the setup with you before delivery day.

What size gate does a porta potty fit through?

A standard unit needs a gate at least 48 inches wide. A wheelchair-accessible unit is far larger, about 88 inches wide, so it usually goes in through a driveway or open lot.

Do I need to be home when you deliver to a mountain lot?

You do not need to be there. Mark the spot with a cone or ribbon and text us any gate code. The driver calls about 30 minutes before arrival.

Will you carry a porta potty down stairs or a steep path?

We roll units over firm, fairly level ground for about 50 feet. Stairs and steep paths are not safe for a loaded unit. We will set it at the top or bottom of the slope instead.

What should I tell you about my hillside lot when I book?

Share the driveway grade, gate width, any low wires and where you want the unit. A photo from the street helps most. That lets us send the right truck the first time.
