How many porta potties does a Chattanooga event need?
A Chattanooga event of up to 4 hours needs 1 standard porta potty for every 50 guests. Longer events need more, down to 1 unit per 25 guests past 8 hours. Add 1 unit for every 5 when alcohol is served, and 1 hand washing station for every 5 toilets when there is food.
| Guests at the busiest point | Up to 4 hours | 5 to 6 hours | 7 to 8 hours | More than 8 hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 guests | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| 100 guests | 2 | 3 | 4 | 4 |
| 150 guests | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
| 200 guests | 4 | 5 | 7 | 8 |
| 300 guests | 6 | 8 | 10 | 12 |
| 500 guests | 10 | 13 | 16 | 20 |
Worked example: a church festival with 250 guests over 6 hours, food, no alcohol. The chart gives 250 ÷ 40 = 6.25, so round up to 7 units. Make at least 1 of the 7 wheelchair-accessible. Food is served, so add 7 ÷ 5 = 2 hand washing stations, rounded up.

Event math uses the standard portable sanitation sizing chart. Crew math uses OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1. See the full sizing guide.

Why do event porta potties come Friday and leave Monday?
Weekend event units are delivered on Friday and picked up on Monday, and both trips are part of the event price. Friday delivery means the units are level, stocked and ready 1 day before Saturday setup. Many weekends also allow a Saturday-morning drop if you ask when you book.
You do not need to be home. The driver calls about 30 minutes before arriving. Mark the spot with a cone or ribbon, and text any gate code. See how a rental works from booking to pickup.

How does the 5 percent accessible rule apply to my event?
The 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2, say at least 5 percent of portable toilets in each cluster must be wheelchair-accessible, with a minimum of 1. An event with 12 units in 2 clusters of 6 needs 2 accessible units, 1 in each cluster, even though 5 percent of 12 rounds to 1.
Our wheelchair-accessible units have a ground-level floor and a 60-inch turning space inside. They need a flat, firm pad about 7.5 by 7.5 feet.

When should an event add hand washing stations?
An event with food should add 1 hand washing station for every 5 toilets, with a minimum of 1. Each station has 2 basins, foot pumps, soap and towels, and holds about 34 gallons, or roughly 500 hand washes. Set the stations between the toilets and the food line.
Kids' birthday parties and petting zoos benefit too, even without a full meal. See the hand washing station rental page.

Where should porta potties go at an event?
Event porta potties belong on level, firm ground, downwind and at least 50 feet from the food when space allows. The truck needs a path about 10 feet wide with 12 feet of clearance. Group the units in 1 or 2 clusters so guests can find them, and pick a spot with light after dark.
- Keep a clear path. Guests should not walk through the serving line to reach a toilet.
- Face doors away from seating when you can, for privacy.
- Avoid low spots. Chattanooga gets about 52 inches of rain a year, and puddles form fast on clay.
- Leave room for the accessible unit on the flattest patch you have.
Which events need more than the basic chart count?
Ball tournaments, car shows and graduations need more than the basic chart because crowds peak at once. A 2-day ball tournament often runs past 8 hours a day, which moves the chart to 1 unit per 25 guests. Car shows on hot pavement and festivals with beer also need more.
Ball tournaments
Count players, coaches and families. Put units near the concession stand, not behind home plate.
Car shows and festivals
Plan for the busiest hour. Add 1 unit for every 5 when beer is sold.
Graduations and birthdays
Backyard parties of 50 to 100 guests usually need 2 or 3 units. A deluxe unit with a sink is a nice touch.
Church picnics and homecomings
Older guests appreciate an accessible unit even at a private event.
Do you need a permit for porta potties at a public event?
A Chattanooga event on public property, such as a city park or a closed street, needs approval from the City of Chattanooga before delivery. Book the park or street first, then book the units. That is 2 bookings, in that order. Events on your own land or a church lot need no city permit in most cases.
Churches, schools and nonprofits can also ask about removing the 9.25 percent Tennessee sales tax. Send your tax-exempt certificate before you pay, and the exemption is applied.

Event and party rental questions
How much does it cost to rent a porta potty for a party?
A standard unit for a weekend event runs $165 to $225, with Friday delivery and Monday pickup included in our core area. A deluxe flushing unit runs $275 to $350, a wheelchair-accessible unit $225 to $295 and a hand washing station $95 to $150. Events are paid at booking. See the porta potty cost guide.
I only need it for a few hours. Why do I have it all weekend?
Weekend event units ride the Friday delivery route and the Monday pickup route. That way the unit is in place before your first guest, and you are not stuck waiting for a truck during cleanup. The weekend is already part of the event price.
Will it get stolen if it's dropped off the day before?
A standard unit weighs about 160 pounds empty, and they are rarely moved. Ask for a spot near the house, the gate or a light. You can ask for a hasp and add a padlock until the event starts. If a unit is damaged or tipped, call us, and we usually replace it the same day.
Can I put a porta potty in a public park?
A unit in a public park needs the park reservation, and often a special event permit, before delivery. In Chattanooga, start with the city's special events office at chattanooga.gov. Once you have approval, send us the date, the gate and the drop spot.
We're a church. Can you remove the sales tax?
Churches, schools and nonprofits can have the sales tax removed when a tax-exempt certificate is on file with us. Send the certificate before your event is paid, and we take the tax line off the quote.
What happens if we cancel because of rain?
Cancelling is free up to 48 hours before delivery. Inside 48 hours, a $50 trip fee applies. Once the units are delivered, the event price is earned, so watch the forecast early in the week before you decide.
Can units be cleaned during a three-day tournament?
Events longer than 2 days can add a mid-event service visit. The driver pumps each unit, cleans it and restocks paper and sanitizer. Tell us the field hours so we come between games, not during them.
