How to Plan Restrooms for an Outdoor Wedding Near Chattanooga
Outdoor venues around Chattanooga are beautiful, and many have only one or two indoor restrooms. A short plan for guest count, hookups and placement keeps lines short and keeps the restrooms out of your photos.
Does a barn or farm wedding venue need rented restrooms?
A barn or farm wedding venue often needs rented restrooms, because many have just 1 or 2 indoor toilets or none at all. Ask the venue how many toilets guests can use and whether a septic system can handle 100 or more people. Rentals fill the gap without straining the venue's plumbing.
Our wedding restroom rental page shows the units couples pick most, from deluxe flushing units to full trailers.
How many restrooms does a 150-guest wedding need?
A 150-guest wedding lasting 6 hours with an open bar needs about 5 toilets under the standard sizing chart. The chart allows 40 guests per unit for 5 to 6 hours, which gives 4 units. Alcohol adds 1 unit for every 5, bringing the total to 5, plus 1 hand wash station.
| Step | Rule | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Base count | 150 guests, 5 to 6 hours: 1 unit per 40 guests | 150 / 40 = 3.75, round up to 4 |
| 2. Alcohol | Add 1 unit for every 5 units | 4 + 1 = 5 |
| 3. Food | 1 hand wash station per 5 toilets, minimum 1 | 1 station |
| 4. Accessibility | At least 5% of units in each cluster, minimum 1 | 1 of the 5 should be wheelchair-accessible |
Change any input and the count shifts. Our porta potty sizing guide has the full chart for every event length.
The accessibility rule comes from the 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2. A wheelchair-accessible unit needs a flat, firm pad about 7.5 by 7.5 feet.
What does a restroom trailer need at a wedding venue?
A restroom trailer needs 3 things at the venue: a garden hose connected to a spigot within about 100 feet, a dedicated 110-volt, 20-amp outlet within about 100 feet, and level ground about 8.5 by 16 feet with truck access. If no outlet is close, we can quote a generator.
| Need | Detail |
|---|---|
| Water | Garden hose to a spigot within about 100 ft |
| Power | Dedicated 110V 20-amp outlet within about 100 ft, or a generator we quote |
| Ground | Level, about 8.5 x 16 ft |
| Access | Room for the truck to back the trailer in |
A 2-stall trailer has a flush toilet and sink in each stall, plus lights, mirrors and climate control. Larger 3 to 4 station models are also available. Details are on the restroom trailer rental page.
Many couples pair a trailer near the reception with a standard unit or two near parking.

Where should wedding restrooms go relative to the ceremony?
Wedding restrooms work best about a 1 to 2 minute walk from the reception, set behind or to the side of the guest area and away from the ceremony backdrop. Keep them out of the photographer's main sight lines. Put them on level ground with a lit path for guests after dark.
- Place units downwind of the dinner tables on a warm day.
- Keep them off the aisle view and the sunset photo spot.
- Light the path with string lights or lanterns for evening guests.
- Leave a clear lane for our truck, within about 50 ft for porta potties.
When should you book restrooms for an outdoor wedding?
Book wedding restrooms as soon as the venue and date are set, especially for spring and fall Saturdays, which are the busiest weekends around Chattanooga. Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before delivery. That makes an early booking low risk if plans change.
For a Saturday wedding, we usually drop units on Friday and pick them up on Monday. That timing is included in the event price.

More questions on this topic
Can a restroom trailer run off the venue's barn outlet?
The trailer needs its own dedicated 110-volt, 20-amp circuit. A barn outlet shared with lights or a band's gear may trip. Ask the venue which circuit is free, or ask us to quote a generator.
How do I count restrooms when the venue already has indoor toilets?
Count the indoor toilets guests can actually use, then subtract them from the chart total. Keep in mind small septic systems may not handle heavy use. Your venue coordinator can tell you its limits.
Should the wedding party get their own restroom?
A separate unit near the getting-ready area saves time for the wedding party. A deluxe flushing unit with a mirror and sink is a popular choice for that spot.
What if it rains on the wedding day?
Set units on gravel, pavement or plywood so guests do not walk through mud. Chattanooga gets about 52 inches of rain a year, so plan a firm path either way.
Do guests at an outdoor wedding need a hand wash station?
When food is served, plan 1 hand wash station per 5 toilets, with at least 1. A restroom trailer or deluxe unit already has a sink inside, which can cover part of that need.
